Dee Estuary - 17th November 2024
I first became aware of the wild marvels of this much overlooked part of the world whilst accompanying my late father in law on visits to the coast near his home on the Wirral. Day trips to have lunch in a pub or a walk along the esplanade were punctuated by my blurting out the names of the exotic wintering wildlife I was seeing!
From peregrine falcon, merlin and hen harrier to vast flocks of wading birds and geese, the air and salt marsh vibrated with their rapier forms and voices as the tide pushed them close to the places where most humans simply were unaware of their presence.
I subsequently spent time in the choicest spots filming sequences for Wild Isles, including the peregrine hunting knot sequence that was the finale of the freshwater episode.

Join me this November to experience some of the wild magic of the Dee Estuary.

We will be spending the day on the northern coastline, close to Birkenhead, and exploring the spots I have come to know well and love as areas brimming with wild potential.
We will meet early in the day at 8am, in good time for the high tide to work its magic and push the throng of birdlife off the huge expanse of salt marsh towards the coast.
We may move location during the day, depending on our fortune, to make the most of the shifting tide as it marches up the estuary.
Numbers of guests are limited to a maximum of 6 people.
